What is AWTNOL?

AWTNOL stands for Art Work That No One Likes.

I created the name because I was afraid to share my personal drawings. Telling myself that it would be okay if nobody liked them made it easier to show my work. AWTNOL is less about seeking recognition and more about an experiment: asking whether I can show even the parts of myself that I would rather hide, and still be okay. Perhaps I have always carried the feeling that I am somehow not enough. AWTNOL was not created to get rid of that feeling. It was created so I could keep making and sharing art while carrying it with me.

When I draw, I rarely decide in advance what I am going to make. I follow whatever appears and draw intuitively. Because of this, I am often surprised by the finished image. What is strange is that I do not intentionally try to create grotesque or disturbing imagery, yet those kinds of images often emerge. Of course, not all of my work is unsettling. Some pieces are playful, warm, humorous, or simply difficult to describe.

What matters to me is not controlling or filtering whatever comes out. The process feels incredibly freeing and satisfying, as if something that has been building up inside me is finally flowing out. Drawing feels less like expression and more like release. Almost like having a bowel movement. Before deciding whether something is beautiful or ugly, clean or dirty, there is relief in simply letting it exist outside of myself.

And unexpectedly, the world did not completely reject it. “Is it okay to show this part of myself?” I think I was asking the same question every time I shared a drawing. Little by little, I began to realize: “Maybe this version of me is okay too.”

Perhaps what I gain from art is not a sense of artistic achievement, but the experience of allowing myself to exist a little more fully. Looking back, I think the drawings were never the point. They were simply the way I found to reveal parts of myself that I didn’t know how to show otherwise. So AWTNOL is not only an art project. It is also a practice of showing the parts of myself I once wanted to hide — and learning that they can exist too.

'AWTNOL is created by Jina Yoon, Canadian artist born in South Korea, 1989. Jina is a wife, a mom, and a VFX Lighting/Compositing Artist at Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She holds a BFA (Experimental Animation) from CalArts. Through AWTNOL, she explores the space between making art, being seen, and letting go of the need for people to like it.'

AWTNOL은 Art Work That No One Likes(아무도 좋아하지 않는 아트)의 약자다.
